I’m amazed that the big brands are even entertaining this as a conversation as especially with where trends are now I struggle to see the ROI here besides getting people to sign contracts with the brands.
I had to come back to this today after the announcement of Cade Cunnigham getting a signature shoe with Nike. What are your thoughts on the potential of his shoe in their crowded signature shoe market?
Haha I was wondering if anyone would make the connection. I think Cade Cunningham getting a signature sneaker speaks to exactly the point I was making in the article. He’s a fun guy and all that but I just think the bar needs to be a lot higher to justify such an investment. Otherwise the signature market and what it means to be a signature athlete becomes devalued.
Honestly, we need fewer signature sneakers in general. While plenty we've seen lately have been very good, there are still too many that don't move the needle.
Wise words from a wise man! Couldn’t agree more. It’s a shame to devalue what used to be an almost sacred achievement for an athlete for the sake of marketing
I'm glad you brought this up re: JB. He doesn't need a signature shoe, especially since he's played in Kobes (and Sabrinas) the entire time. Let's just get his PEs more available for everyone!!
Adidas going out of their way to diss Converse/ SGA’s signature sneaker in the new AE 2 spot was an interesting twist on this, I thought.
